Of Sterner Stuff
"Of Sterner Stuff" is my first straight science fiction story in many years. It takes place in the near future and deals with issues of ambition, ethics, and friendship. The protagonists are microbiology researchers who discover something unexpected in the human genome. Approx. length: 4,600 words.
The title is from Marc Antony's famous speech in Julius Caesar:
When that the poor have cried, Caesar hath wept;
Ambition should be made of sterner stuff.
Yet Brutus says he was ambitious,
And Brutus is an honorable man.
I submitted the story to Asimov's Science Fiction on January 5. I will update with comments as I learn of its progress.
